This is a tool I use in coaching sessions to help clients think about how they’re responding to change, I normally use it in context of a career or life change, but it can be used for any period of adjustment so I thought it was worth sharing with you.
There are 7 stages of the change curve that I'll talk through below. You may go through them in a different order and you may also revisit some or all of them a number of times, so please don't feel that this is a 'one size fits all model'. I find it can be helpful to give some context to how you’re feeling and also to give perspective that it will most likely be a temporary state.
Shock
You might enter this stage straight away or come back to it later, when you’ve had time to put everything in place that needs to happen. You feel that the enormity of it can’t sink in or that you don’t know what to do next.
Denial
You might not want to or be able to accept that this is happening. You probably don’t want to talk about it and find yourself avoiding difficult discussions around it.
Resistance / Anger
You’re unable to see anything positive about the situation. You don’t want it to be happening and it feels like you’re being ‘done to’.
Depression
You start to realise that everything is changing and you have a lack of motivation and enthusiasm for anything.
Acceptance
You start to engage with the change, you’re able to see opportunities and positives, no matter how small. You start being able to take action and thinking about the future.
Hope
The future is now becoming the new reality, you’re able to see how this is going to work and accept that things are going to be ok. You are not just accepting the changes, you’re embracing them too.
Commitment
The change has become second nature and the new normal. You are productive and at ease again.
Where do you see yourself on the curve at the moment? Feel free to send me a message and let me know.
If you'd like to go into this in more detail and make a personalised plan for you to move forward I'm offering one off coaching sessions around this model.
